Plastics and composites
The plastics and composites industry faces a number of challenges, including growing environmental concerns about waste and pollution and the need to develop more sustainable and circular business models. This has led to a growing demand for alternative materials such as bioplastics or natural additives, and a need to explore new manufacturing processes that minimise waste and emissions. Cellulose nanocrystals are well placed to address these challenges. They have been investigated as a potential additive for improving various aspects of plastics and composites.
Reinforcing agents: TONACELL® can be used as a reinforcing agent for plastics and composites to improve their mechanical properties such as strength, stiffness and toughness. Their high aspect ratio and high surface area allow them to form strong interfacial bonds with the polymer matrix and provide reinforcement.
Biodegradable plastics: TONACELL® can be used as a natural additive for biodegradable plastics to improve their mechanical properties and reduce their environmental impact. They can increase the strength and hardness of biodegradable plastics while improving their biodegradability.
Antimicrobial properties: TONACELL® can be used as a natural antimicrobial agent in plastics and composites to inhibit the growth of bacteria and fungi. They can be incorporated into the polymer matrix, reducing the risk of microbial contamination.
Barrier properties: TONACELL® can be used as a natural barrier in plastics and composites to increase their resistance to moisture, oxygen and other gases. They can form a dense, homogeneous barrier layer in the polymer matrix, reducing permeation and improving shelf life.
