Agricultural applications

Agriculture faces a number of challenges, including climate change, soil degradation, water scarcity and biodiversity loss. Cellulose nanocrystals have been shown to help alleviate some of these problems due to their unique physical and chemical properties.

Plant growth promoters: TONACELL® can be used as a plant growth promoter because of their ability to increase nutrient uptake and water retention in plants. They can be incorporated into fertilisers or soil amendments to improve plant growth and yield.

Crop Protection: TONACELL® can be used as a protective coating for frozen crops because of their ability to prevent freezing. They can be sprayed on buds to reduce mortality during freezing and increase fruit yields.

Pesticide delivery systems: TONACELL® can be used as a carrier for pesticides and other agrochemicals to achieve controlled release and targeted delivery to crops. This improves the effectiveness of pesticides while reducing environmental contamination and health risks.

Soil remediation: TONACELL® can be used to improve soil quality and reduce soil contamination by immobilising heavy metals and other pollutants. They can also promote the degradation of organic pollutants in soil through their high surface area and adsorption capacity.
